Transformations, an organisation dedicated to helping individuals overcome drug addiction, has become a beacon of hope for many in Cowra and beyond. Founded in 1999 on the Gold Coast by CEO Michael Barrett, himself a former drug addict, Transformations began with a simple yet powerful mission: to offer a safe haven where addicts could find love, purpose, and ultimately, freedom from addiction.
Michael Barrett's personal journey of liberation from long-term addiction fueled his vision to empower others facing similar struggles. Starting with a modest halfway house in Surfers Paradise, Transformations has grown exponentially over the years, developing a holistic, evidence-based program designed to break the cycle of addiction and transform lives.
Today, Transformations operates across several locations including Cowra, Gold Coast, Hervey Bay, Hobart, and Brisbane. These facilities collectively accommodate 95 individuals through their Residential Recovery Program, offering a structured environment where individuals can rebuild their lives with the support of trained professionals and peers.
"Programs like Transformations are more crucial than ever," said Michael Golden, Cowra Transformations Central NSW Campus Director.
"With millions of Australians struggling with drug use, the need for effective rehabilitation programs that offer lasting solutions has never been more urgent."

Robert Gloginja, a former resident of Forbes, shared his transformative journey with Transformations in Cowra. He said that without it - "he would still be in a dark place with limited prospects."
"The program not only saved my life but gave me a renewed sense of purpose. I can now be the best version of myself not just for me but for my family," Robert said. After successfully completing the program and maintaining sobriety for over two years, Robert now works for Transformations, paying forward the support and guidance he once received.
"I cannot speak highly enough of the program, the staff and what this has done for me and my family," Rob said.
"Addiction is a scourge on our society and it can destroy lives sadly. If you are genuine about kicking your habit you should try and enroll in the program and give it a shot - it is the best decision I have ever made!"
Michael Golden, who oversees operations in Cowra, attests to the program's positive impact.
"I've witnessed firsthand the incredible changes in individuals like Robert," he said.
"Transformations doesn't just treat addiction; it helps individuals rediscover their potential and rebuild their lives from the ground up. Since Robert arrived we have had 50 people go through, seven graduates of the program (of which four work at Transformations) and another two who have started their own businesses," said Michael.
"Transformations offers health support through local GPs, case management, fitness, individual counselling, group therapy, a curriculum, and work therapy - all of which are vital for beating addiction."
As Transformations continues to expand its reach and impact, the organisation remains committed to providing a comprehensive approach to addiction recovery. Through therapeutic interventions, vocational training, and community support, Transformations equips individuals with the tools and confidence needed to achieve lasting sobriety and pursue fulfilling futures. Participants also have access to a local psychologist as well.
"We operate on a shoestring budget. Most of our work is unpaid. We are financially supported by six regional churches throughout Central NSW (Dubbo, Orange, Forbes, Wellington, Mudgee and Gilgandra) and on donations from individuals and businesses. All donations are tax deductible and we welcome any support to keep this vital program going," said Mr. Golden.
